CSI Statement of Support Survey

Dear CSI members,

It is with deepest empathy and caring that the CSI Executive Council reaches out to all our members to send a message of solidarity as we begin the 2020-21 year for our Society. Traumatic and painful events have deeply affected our communities. From the unprecedented pandemic to the recent events that have caused and are causing now so much pain and grief in the Black community. The collective mourning of Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd and countless others cannot be ignored. We want members to know that we stand here with you.

Embedded within CSI’s vision statement is the commitment of our members to contribute to the realization of a healthy society by fostering wellness and human dignity. CSI’s vision and mission – to promote excellence in counseling - cannot be achieved without unifying our voices to stand for human rights and supporting one another in this work. Courageous conversations need to happen to dismantle racism and oppressive systems. As counselors, the work must start with us at the individual-level, but it must also include our commitment to activism that seeks to promote equality. This is a time for us as counselors to stand united against systemic hate most historically and pervasively felt in our communities of color, in our Black communities. Our commitment to servant leadership compels us to be advocates, to be humble, to help improve the wellness of our society for the benefit of all, but most importantly to save lives. Caring and purposeful actions need to be taken to encourage each other through these difficult times.

During the annual Executive Council summer meeting last week, we identified initiatives and funding priorities for the year ahead with a special, intentional emphasis on social justice to continue our more than 35 year consistent, unchanged commitment to the realization of a healthy society by fostering wellness and human dignity. We desire to create brave spaces for conversations to advance our mission and vision and will continue throughout the year in different ways for CSI International. We encourage all members and chapters to thoughtfully engage and find ways to foster open spaces for courageous conversations to happen as their local chapter activities are planned in the coming year.

To begin these conversations, we invite you to attend a special webinar hosted by CSI Past-President, Dr. Courtland Lee, this summer that will focus on racism and mental health. Detailed information will be sent out soon with registration links for ths webinar as all as additional programs and initiatives in the coming year.

We will continue this commitment and intentionally create opportunities to continue the advocacy work that is needed. We also want to hear your ideas about ways CSI might best serve its members in moving this agenda forward.

For over 35 years CSI has had an unwavering commitment to promote human dignity, equality, and a professional space where we can care for one another as we face these challenges.  As your Executive Council, we want you to know that We see you. We are here. We support you. We stand with you.

In Solidarity,
Your CSI Executive Council
