Karen Favreau received her Master of Arts in Counseling and Counselor Education with a specialty in Student Development/College Counseling in the Upsilon Nu Chi chapter at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in May of 2009. Soon thereafter she started her dream job as Academic Program Coordinator for The Honors Program at North Carolina A&T University, also in Greensboro.

Her additional careers included library science, and she worked for many years as a librarian after graduating with a Master’s Degree in that field. She was an accomplished musician, cartoonist and cartoon teacher, and freelance writer. Her spiritual memoir, Ridiculous Packaging: or, my long, strange journey from atheist to Episcopalian, in two acts, was released by Cowley Publications in 2005. Karen was active in the First Episcopal Church in Greensboro and contributed many hours of volunteer service to church members and the local community.

Karen was the senior author of a proposal to Chi Sigma Iota, International, to establish the Counselor’s Bookshelf, and she became one of its first editors. Her vision was to provide an on-line resource where counseling students, professional counselors, and counselor educators could share their reactions to books that helped them become a better counselor, bibliotherapy resources, movies and TV shows, and professional books.

Karen died July 7,2010, after a battle with ovarian cancer that began suddenly in October of 2009. Throughout her illness, she maintained a strong, sometimes irreverent, sense of humor and courage. Her presence is already missed.

Friends and acquaintances, both personal and professional, are invited to use this forum to share memories of Karen and help others understand the special gift she was in our lives.

If you would like to make a donation to CSI in memory of Ms. Favreau, you can contribute to CSI’s General Fund.

Originally posted on 7/9/2010 at csi-net.org.

Karen,
you are truly missed. It was an honor supervising and learning from
you. You had a unique, non-judgmental, and highly effective counseling
style that enabled college students to open up and feel comfortable in
your presence. Your works of kindness and love for your fellow students,
clients, colleagues, and faculty will be forever remembered. Thank you!

I
was very saddened to hear that Karen passed away. I had the privilege
to meet Karen when she was interning at Guilford College in the
counseling center and I was working there with the adult college
students. I was struck by her calm presence and genuine personality that
clearly demonstrated her care and compassion for others. I am
certain that she helped many a person during her time at Guilford and
made a significant impact on those she came into contact with. My
condolences to her family and closest friends.

Originally posted on 7/15/2010 at csi-net.org.

I
was so sorry to hear this news. Karen was an outstanding student and I
appreciated her fun, creative, easy going approach to life. Her sense of

I
wish that I had known Karen better. While we were graduate students, I
always noticed her outgoing nature and her devotion to the counseling
profession. She told me about her dedication to working with college
students and I know that NC A&T was fortunate to have her. Everyone
in Chi Sigma Iota can appreciate her contributions to this organization
and her role in creating the Counselor's Bookshelf, which continues to
be a wonderful resource for our members. My condolences to her family
and friends.

Originally posted on 7/17/2010 at csi-net.org.
