Matthew Shepard was a college student found beaten, robbed, and left for dead; and many believed that it was because he identified as gay. The company interviews his friends, family, and people of the town to gather their thoughts on his death and the media that surrounded it. The movie depicts dramatized events, such as the trials of his two alleged murderers, which happened in the months following his death. The movie gives insight into the different beliefs about the LGBTQ community in Wyoming at that time. It also provides insight into the struggles and fears that those who identified in that community faced.

This movie can provide education to counselors who may not have much experience with the LGBTQ community, as well as background on one of the major movements in that community. The movie was based on the real transcripts of the interview, but keep in mind that it still has some essences of fiction throughout. Counselors may also be able to glean knowledge about the context of the coming out process in small rural towns as well as how advocating for clients can be a very important part of their role. The interviews depict the range of attitudes that existed and in many places still exist about people’s sexual orientation and it is important for counselors to have an understanding of those differing beliefs.
