The central characters are a nuclear family: mom (Mary Tyler Moore), dad (Donald Sutherland) and son (Timothy Hutton). I won't go into much detail concerning what happens in the movie, but it is great film for seeing a dysfunctional family struggle with the wounds of a familial death.

My reason for posting this movie here is the on-screen counseling relationship between Conrad (Hutton) and his counselor (played excellently by Judd Hirsch). I went to see this movie with my mom and dad when I was in middle school. It was the first time I remember "seeing" counseling. It was also one of the first times I can recall thinking: "This might be a nice job!"

I advise all of you to see this movie. The acting and screenplay are both fabulous. You owe it to yourself to see this film. It deals with anxiety, depression, and family dynamics - all, in a very human, touching way.

Originally posted on 12/04/2011 at csi-net.org
