The addicts participating believe that they are doing a documentary about addiction; they have no idea that at the end they will be faced with friends and family in an intervention. The show takes not only a current look at the addict’s life but a historical one as all. It enables the viewer to gain a deeper understanding as to why individuals become addicted and why and how family members enable their loved ones addiction. At the end each show addicts are confronted about their addiction by family members and a trained interventionist. Addicts are then given the option to enter a rehab and deal with their addiction or face the consequences of family members no longer enabling them.

This show offers a voyeuristic perspective into addiction as well as many other mental disorders. Counseling students will be able to observe a live intervention to see how the process works. Although this is not a typical counseling intervention per se, there may indeed be times when counselors will be working with family members of an addicted person and facilitate similar types of interventions. It is a must see for any counseling student interested in working with addictions.

Originally posted on 4/29/2010 at csi-net.orhg
