This documentary shows various aspects of the treatment of eating disorders (e.g., individual, family, and group counseling sessions). The treatment process for eating disorders is realistically portrayed and nearly every aspect of the treatment program is presented, including daily "weigh-ins” and observed mealtimes. The film follows the experiences of four patients: Shelly, Brittany, Polly, and Alisa. In the film, each woman has the opportunity to discuss the impact the eating disorder has on her relationships with others. Each woman tells the "story” of her eating disorder, allowing the viewer to note the strength and resilience of all four women as they develop coping skills.

THIN presents a balanced portrayal of those with eating disorders; the women are seen making progress in treatment, yet their "relapses" are also presented. It is sometimes difficult to watch the effect of the women’s disorders on their mental and physical wellbeing. I have used this film in several counselor education courses (e.g., DSM course, Treatment of Children and Adolescents) because I appreciate the complex portrayal of those with eating disorders. Specifically, this movie does not minimize the difficulty in treating this population and, as such, it is a poignant and moving representation of the struggles that those with eating disorders may experience.

Originally posted on 8/30/2009 at csi-net.org
