Review:
Director Denzel Washington also plays a major role as a psychiatrist who both helps and learns from a young seaman whose anger has brought him to a place of either learning to overcome it or be discharged from the service. This story is inspired by the life experiences of Antwone Fisher. Flashbacks to Antwone’s childhood vividly portray the insidious and devastating effects of slavery, oppression, and social negligence that plague individuals, families, and our society as a whole. This connection can be easily overlooked by blaming Antwone’s adoptive family and pathetic mother who had made no effort to find out what happened to him after giving him up at birth.

This movie can be used to demonstrate resistance, facilitative challenging, authentic friendship and love, transference, counter-transference, accurate and substantive empathy, life style, early recollections, family dynamics, systems, generational significance, and how heritage and culture are so very important to development. This movie is emotionally moving in so many ways but inspiring above all. One cannot experience it without feeling respect and appreciation for the courage, intelligence, and resourcefulness of all the Antwone Fishers who are living a similar journey.
 
 
Favorite scenes: initial interviews (client resistance); use of bibliotherapy to open Antwone’s mind to the influence of slavery in his life, Antwone confronting Washington on creating a bond and then abandoning him per Navy regulations (like everyone else), the search for his family and the significance to his life until now unknown.
