The most powerful aspect of this book is Krieger’s ability to immerse the reader in his perspective at each stage on the journey of his gender identity development. At the beginning of the memoir, the author identifies as a female lesbian. As he becomes aware of the ways in which this identity does not fully describe him, he is able to articulate each doubt and each subtle change in his self-concept in a way that is profoundly comprehensible to the reader. His awareness of his own psychological process is so precise that his gradual adoption of a more nuanced identity makes utter sense even to a reader who is utterly unfamiliar with the subject.

As a counselor, this book was helpful because it leads the reader to understand that sexuality, biological sex, gender identity, and gender expression are four separate issues. It’s helpful for counselors and clients to view these concepts along a spectrum versus an either/or mentality. Finally, this book can provide counselors insight into the psychological process that a client struggling with gender identity might experience, and provides ideas for how to work with clients adjusting to this.

Originally posted on 1/03/2013 at csi-net.org

This topic is one that I think is very relevant right now but unfortunately there is a lack of resources mental health professionals may rely on to gain insight into the challenges and unique journeys individuals from this population may face. Thank you for your review. I have added this book to my "to-read" list.
