In her children’s book I Shook Up the World, The Incredible Life of Muhammad Ali, Maryum Ali, the oldest daughter of Muhammad Ali, recounts her father’s amazing story. The book’s vivid illustrations of Muhammad Ali are presented in a poetic, fun, and exciting format as 10 suspenseful rounds in a boxing ring.

The purpose of the book is to encourage children to follow their dreams. The ultimate moral value of Muhammad’s life was his own well being, which lead him to experience a purposeful and fulfilling life. His talent, courage, and personality brought him before leaders all over the world. The book includes biographical information, a timeline of his accomplishments, a summary of what’s happened to Ali since retiring from boxing, and his diagnosis of Parkinson’s syndrome.

Ali’s secret to a successful life was to hold fast to the words of his father, "Do what’s inside your heart, and never give up on your dreams.” I recommend this book to be placed on the ‘must read’ book list in public schools to inspire, engage, and motivate all children to follow their dreams. Counselors can use this book for self-motivation, knowledge, encouragement, and building self-esteem in oneself. It can also be used to build self-esteem in clients who do not value themselves and their own worth and/or who pay more attention to the negative aspect of themselves.

Originally posted on 5/17/2009 at csi-net.org
