Now talk about personality!!! What a great spokesperson for Down Syndrome Awareness!

As school counselor, college counselors, and clinical mental health counselors, we will meet and work with students and clients who have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome or have family members who have. To provide ethical and effective care for our clients, it's important that we enhance our awareness about diagnoses, adopt pro-social attitudes and beliefs about the clients we work with, increase our knowledge and skills in working with clients, and take action to advocate for client needs. Let's start the discussion with the questions below. If you have any other questions or comments, feel free to post those too.

What experiences do you have working with clients diagnosed with Down Syndrome?

What questions do you have?

Does anyone have a their own story to share?

In what ways can we help to increase awareness, acceptance, and respect about Down Syndrome and the people affected by it?

Hello Everyone!

My big brother, Kyle, has Down Syndrome and he is the best brother I could ever ask for. Growing up with Kyle and understanding Down Syndrome from a young age has helped me grow into the loving person that I am today. My brother teaches me how to love in the most genuine way, and I always say, "he does not have a mean bone in his body."

I remember when I was in K-12 school, I completed several school projects on Down Syndrome and one interesting aspect I ran into over the years, was that the life expectancy rate for people with Down Syndrome has increased dramatically over the years. When I was in elementary school the average life expectancy for a person with Down Syndrome was about 30 years old, and now the average life expectancy of individuals with Down syndrome is 60 years, with many living to be much older. This shows that acceptance, living conditions, and treatment, of people with Down Syndrome, has improved drastically throughout my and my brother Kyle's lifetimes. Cool fact!

To increase awareness, acceptance, and respect for people with Down Syndrome, and their loved ones, I think we should get to know people with Down Syndrome, include this population of people into community engagement programs and events in the community, and another rewarding idea would be to be a part of a mentoring program with people who have Down Syndrome.

Thank you so much for proposing this topic and video, Jonnie.
