Nov. 7, 1951 – March 13, 2024

Dr. Lori Ann Russell-Chapin dedicated her life to uniting the wonders of the heart and the powers of the mind.  In her nearly 40-year career with Bradley University, she has impacted generations of students and colleagues, serving as a mentor, friend, and inspiration. Lori was a Life Member of Chi Sigma Iota who served as Co-Faculty Chapter Advisor to the Beta Phi Chapter at Bradley University for 14 years. As Chair, she supported the formation of the Beta Phi Chapter in 1995. Lori presented a CSI Webinar, Your Supervision Question: Its Impact on Supervision Model Selection, and a CSI-Sponsored Education Session on supervising master’s level interns.

Her passion and devotion to counseling, education, research, and neurocounseling made her a natural teacher and gifted healer. During her tenure at Bradley University, Lori earned many accolades, including the American Mental Health Counseling Association’s Counselor of the Year award, the American Counseling Association’s Trailblazer Award, a Bradley Caterpillar Professorship, and the designation of an American Counseling Association Fellow.

Lori’s most outstanding and enduring achievements are the countless individuals impacted and helped by those she taught to be professional counselors. Lori used the following quote in her signature, describing how she approached life, love, and work:

Do all you can with what you have in the time you have in the place you are.

Lori is survived by her husband Ted, daughter Elissa and her partner Adam Morris, son Jamieson and his wife Jody (Vance), and their four daughters.

Dr. Lily Rosqueta–Rosales was the Founding President of IOTA PHI Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, the first overseas chapter of CHI SIGMA IOTA. She was one of the founders of Guidance and Counseling of the Philippines.

During her term as President of the former Philippine Guidance & Personnel Association (PGPA) and now Philippine Guidance Counselors Association (PGCA), she worked hard for the professionalizing of guidance that led to the signing into law the Republic Act 9258 known as Guidance & Counseling Act of 2004.

She was the First Chairman of the Professional Regulatory Board of Guidance & Counseling of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) of the Philippines.

She was the Dean of the College of Education of the University of the Philippines; she also served as professor of counselor education and of educational psychology, professorial lecturer in educational administration, Officer-in-Charge of the Counseling and Testing Center and of the Guidance Laboratory and Chairman of the Department of Counselor Education. These academic involvements acknowledged her as an eminent guidance counselor, counseling psychologist, educator and administrator.

An epitome of a successful professional committed to her profession and dedicated to excellence, truth, integrity and service, the CHI SIGMA IOTA Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International awarded her the first DR. THOMAS J. SWEENEY PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD which “recognizes and honors persons who through their vision, leadership, and concern for others have strengthened, expanded, and enhanced the counselor profession over a span of years at local, state, regional, national and international levels” during the 1996 World Conference in Counseling held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America.


Dr. Rosales was the only Asian in the International Academy of Leaders for Excellence in Counselor Education.  Among her numerous awards as a multi-awardee are: the University of Northern Colorado Distinguished International Alumna Award “for having introduced innovations in counseling practice in far-flung areas of the world and for her professional achievements”, the Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award, the Young Women’s Christian Association Leadership Award in Christian Education, the Philippine Guidance and Personnel Association Service Award, the University of the Philippines Education Alumni Association Award for Integrity and Service, Iota Phi’s Counselor Leadership Award, the Professional Regulation Commission Most Outstanding Professional of the Year Award, Outstanding Narvacaneo Award for outstanding professional achievements  as a leading international counselor.

She was the first recipient of the of the University of the Philippines Diamond Jubilee – San Miguel Corporation Professorial Chair in Counselor Education and also the recipient of University of the Philippines Investment Portfolio Professorial Chair in Educational Psychology. Dr. Rosales served as senior guidance counselor, professor and administrator for forty years at the University of the Philippines flagship campus in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines.


Dr. Rosales was the eldest daughter of Professor Froilan C. Rosqueta Sr. of the University of the Philippines and Rosalina Mendoza-Rosqueta, and is married to Rodolfo Ch. Veloso Rosales, civil engineer and retired Assistant Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways with whom she had six children: Rodolfo Jr., Romeo Allan, Roy Victor, Lilian Rhodora, Roger Lyle, and Lisa Rosalie.

And with that suggestion, Sam began to (as he would interject in song) “move on down the road” to become a counselor who wrote prolifically, taught thousands of students, and left a lasting impact on the field of counseling.

As a young counselor, Sam aligned himself with Carl Rogers, and while he expanded his theoretical perspective over time, he lived and exemplified Rogers’ core conditions of genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and empathy. As a graduate student
 being taught from several of his textbooks, I was a bit awe-struck when I first met Sam after a delightfully humorous and inspiring presentation at a Chi Sigma Iota workshop. When we broke into small groups, I witnessed how he responded to each member
 in a gentle way where each felt heard and valued. Over the years, I came to realize anyone who interacted with Sam experienced this same gentle attentiveness — combined with a bit of song and a pun.

Sam Gladding had many professional roles, all which he performed with excellence. He was a professor at Wake Forest and also served there as assistant to the president for special projects, associate provost, and chair of the Department of Counseling.
 He authored 45 books, three of those published in 2021, the year of his death. He mentored both students and new counselor educators, offering encouragement and direction. Throughout his professional career, he served as president of the American
 Counseling Association, Chi Sigma Iota, and many other counseling associations. In addition to these roles, Sam was “a counselor,” an identity and a role he owned proudly.

Though Sam did not become a minister, he sought out ways to minister to those in distress. In 1995, he took a group of undergraduate students to Calcutta, India to work in some of Mother Teresa’s homes for the destitute and dying. After the attack on
 the World Trade Center, Sam went to New York to provide psychological first aid to the families of those killed. Later, when a campus shooting occurred at Virginia Tech, Sam provided assistance to the faculty and students.

For all of his accomplishments, Sam received numerous international awards and recognitions, and with each he accepted humbly and with sincere gratitude. However, Sam was keenly aware of the work done by counselors who provide direct services to students
 and clients and felt they were often overlooked when awards were presented. So, he and his wife, Claire, established ACA’s Samuel T. Gladding’s Unsung Hero Award as a way of recognizing those doing this important work.

Sam thoroughly embraced and enjoyed his life, and while his faith prepared him for Life’s ending, his exuberance for life made him very reluctant to leave and miss out on so many experiences. He cherished the times he shared with his wife Claire and their
 three sons — Ben, Nate, and Tim, and he beamed proudly when Ben and his wife Sara made him a grandfather with the arrival of Leo Templeman Gladding.

The counseling profession lost an incredible man, leader and scholar with the passing of Sam Gladding, and the world lost a source of creativity, laughter, wisdom and compassion. Sam wrote of endings and beginnings in his poem “Goodbye and Hello.”

Saying “good bye” is bittersweet


as it marks the start of transition.

So I prefer to say “good day”

or let departures pass in silence.

Yet in bidding a final farewell to the group

I am free to create new “hellos.”

Dr. Samuel Templeman Gladding, 76, of Winston-Salem died December 6, 2021, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.


He was born in Decatur, GA, the son of the late Russell and Gertrude Gladding. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Claire Gladding of Winston-Salem, sons Ben Gladding (Sara) of Casablanca, Morocco, Nate Gladding and Tim Gladding of Winston-Salem,
 and grandson Leo Templeman Gladding of Casablanca. He is also survived by his brother, Russell Gladding (Kathy) of Vidalia, Georgia, his sister Peggy Smith of Atlanta, and many loving family, friends, students, and colleagues.


He received a Bachelor of Arts in history at Wake Forest, a Master of Arts in religion at Yale, a Master of Arts in counseling at Wake Forest and a Ph.D. in family relations at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Gladding also completed
 a post-doctorate in psychology at UNC-G. At Wake Forest, he was in the Army ROTC program and completed his military service in the Army Reserves at Fort Lee, VA. In 2016, he was inducted into the Army ROTC National Hall of Fame.


Dr. Gladding was internationally recognized as a prolific author of books on counseling and served as a professor of counseling at Wake Forest University for over 30 years. During his career he traveled worldwide speaking, teaching, and consulting. He
 served as president of the American Counseling Association as well as other national and international counseling associations and was honored with an extensive list of awards for his writing, professional service, and mentorship.

Before beginning his academic career, he was director of children's services at the Rockingham County (NC) Counseling Center. Before joining the Wake Forest faculty, he was a faculty member at Rockingham Community College, Fairfield University (CT) and
 the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In 1990, he arrived at Wake Forest as professor of counseling and assistant to the president for special projects. He served as an assistant to the late President Thomas K. Hearn Jr. from 1990 to 1997.
 From 1997 to 2007, he was an associate provost at Wake Forest. Dr. Gladding played a leading role in transitioning counseling from being a program in the Department of Education to being the Department of Counseling. He chaired the department for
 many years. He was also called upon to counsel the families of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack and the 2007 shooting at Virginia Tech during his tenure.


Dr. Gladding's enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students in and out of the classroom was well known. He led counseling graduate students on academic visits to Wake Forest's residential study center in Vienna, Austria, accompanied students to India
 to volunteer at Mother Theresa's facilities that serve the poor and dying, and in recent years, taught at Wake Forest's program for first-year undergraduates in Copenhagen, Denmark. While much of his teaching at Wake Forest was with graduate counseling
 students, he continued to teach undergraduates regularly. He also volunteered as a faculty fellow in on-campus residence halls as well as a faculty advisor for the APO service organization.


A memorial service will be held January 29th at 2 PM in Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gladding Memorial Scholarship or the Samuel T. Gladding Endowment for the Department

Tribute to a Friend and Colleague

Joseph R. Kandor, the third president of CSI (1988-89), passed away on July 24, 2018.  He served as a counselor educator at the State University of New York (SUNY)- Brockport for 39 years and as its department chair for 29 years. Such tenure is testimony to an extraordinarily intelligent, compassionate and effective professional. He also had the distinction of being the longest serving chair of the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP). More than a distinguished leader he was a dear friend and mentor to many. 

I had an opportunity to get to know Joe through both CACREP and CSI. In fact, I had something to do with his offering to be a candidate for office. Joe had a low-key personal style, winning smile and genuine commitment to our profession. He exemplified what later became our servant leader model. Service to others is above self in all ways.

As our third president, his decision to run for office was as a statement of faith in the need for a new organization dedicated to the pursuit of excellence for its members and the profession.  He said, “…  the major thrust of CSI growth and development is through its chapters. CSI must provide service to the membership through viable and productive programs which meet CSI’s professional goals and membership needs." Having served as the first and founding Chapter Faculty Advisor for NU chapter, he knew well the value of early leadership involvement of those new to the profession.

It was during his tenure as CSI President that Rho Chi Sigma Rehabilitation Honor Society officially merged into CSI. With thirty chapters and over 400 members across the country, RCS and CSI led the way in efforts to help unify the counseling profession. In 2017, rehabilitation counseling accreditation (Council on Rehabilitation Education, CORE) was unified with CACREP.

Perhaps no one knew him better than another CSI past president and retired CEO and president of CACREP, Carol Bobby:

“Simply put, Joe was one of those guys whose demeanor reflected a sense of confidence, fairness, and reliability. He collected his thoughts before speaking (or at least most of the time he did).  He had a sense of humor.  He was organized.  Thus, in a short 1½ years after beginning service on the CACREP Board, he was elected unanimously by the Board members to serve as its 3rd chair.

He cared deeply about the work of CACREP.  He cared deeply about gaining recognition for the counseling profession.  He cared deeply about his students and the faculty at SUNY Brockport.  He also cared deeply about his friends.  He had a group of basketball-playing buddies and a group of breakfast buddies that he often talked about with great enthusiasm and fondness. For Joe, relationship was important.  But it was always clear to me that Joe cared most deeply about his family.  Joe cherished his family – his wife Jan, his daughters Ronalee and Sundae and their respective spouses, and his two grandchildren.  In later years, when I would get holiday letters from Joe and Jan, it was clear that it was his family that gave him continued and enduring meaning in his life.“

No higher tribute can be made. Joe was a model of excellence in all ways that are important. I am among the many who miss him.

Obituary for Dr. Joseph R. Kandor

Joseph R. Kandor passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.  He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Janice, beloved daughters, Ronalee (Bill) Newman, Sundae (Greg) Avery, his favorite grandson, Brendan Newman and his favorite granddaughter, Sophia Avery.

Joe worked at The College at Brockport for 39 years and was Chairman of the Counselor Education Department for 29 years. During his college years, he was a member of the varsity tennis and varsity swim teams. At The College of Brockport, he was an avid noon-time basketball player. He continued his love of sports watching Brendan and Sophia in their athletics.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28th at 10 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 35 State St., Brockport. Flowers are respectfully declined. Donations may be made to the Joseph R. Dr. Jon Carlson, passed away on February 1, 2017, in Madison, Wisconsin due to complications from a bone marrow transplant. Jon had a long teaching career that included positions at Wayne State University (1969-1971); Governors State University (1971-1973); Nova Southeastern University (1973-1975); University of Hawaii (1976-1977); University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1978-1982); Adler School of Professional Psychology (1985-1989); and Governors State University (1989 – 2014). He earned a doctorate (Ed.D.) in counseling and guidance from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1971, and he was a licensed professional counselor, school counselor, and alcohol and drug counselor. He practiced in Illinois, Florida, and Hawaii and at the Lake Geneva Wellness Clinic (Wisconsin) for over 40 years. He had over 60,000 direct contact hours with individuals, couples and families. Jon was the author of over 60 books, over 185 professional articles and book chapters, and the creator of over 300 professional training videos. He served as the editor of several journals, and was a prominent Adlerian scholar and practitioner. Many of his books and videos are among the main learning tools in Adlerian psychology.

Jon fully squeezed the most of out of his 71 years on Earth. A proud and active father of five children married to the love of his life for 50 years, Jon excelled as a prolific scholar, educator, college professor, psychologist, competitive athlete, and advocate for people others in the community. Whereas Jon always dreamed of fishing and catching the big one, all along he was the big fish for the many people around him. The theme of Jon’s life was to never stop learning and to always grow beyond one’s perceived boundaries. Despite the many professional achievements, Jon was most proud of helping other people reach their goals. He embodied encouragement. If you were one of his students (or one of his children) then he most likely constantly reminded you to go get a doctorate. He liked Hawaiian shirts, and to make to-do lists. He believed in the gospel of Carl Rogers and Aaron Rodgers.

Jon did lots of things, but at the end of each day he would meditate, saying a loving kindness prayer for every person who he interacted with that day- colleagues, students, clients, family, friends, cashiers, the newspaper carriers, and anyone else whose life collided with his that day. He believed that life was constituted of moment to moment encounters, and that making a positive difference in the world began with these moments.

He will be missed by his family and many friends, colleagues, and his beloved dog, Huxley.

With the recent passing of Dr. Don C. Locke, the counseling profession and CSI lost one of our greatest advocates, educators, scholars, and mentors.

He was a powerful and courageous voice at critical times for social justice and equality and his trademark humor, energy, and thoughtfulness were contagious. He was instrumental in fighting for the approval of the multicultural counseling competencies and advancing the literature of multiculturalism through his scholarship.

His legacy of positive change was further defined by his passion for mentoring students to become advocates and to serve the counseling profession. Generations of counselors and counselor educators will continue to be impacted from his guidance and example. The following statement by UNC Asheville Chancellor Mary Grant exemplifies Dr. Locke’s immense impact: "He truly believed that education was the greatest tool that we have for making a difference in the lives of students in our communities,” Grant said. "I think his greatest contribution is he changed people's lives. He made sure we had honest conversations around hard issues particularly race and culture and class.”

As an implementer of positive change, his gifts to the counseling profession and to his community are immeasurable and we are all better because of him. Thank you Don, you will be greatly missed.

A Tribute In Memory of Dr. Don C. Locke

I have been pondering words to share about the life and influence of my friend, Don C. Locke.  Eloquence in this endeavor is already apparent by those who preceded me in tribute. I must admit too that a part of my delay has been in the realization and impact of losing in such a short time not only one but several others dear to me (Myers, Herr and Cooper).  All also were past presidents of several organizations including CSI.

In addition, Locke, Myers, and Herr were the authors of the Handbook of Counseling. In typical fashion for them, they donated all of their royalties for this outstanding text to the mission and membership of CSI.  It is still a relevant text for many purposes today because of how they designed it.

Such generosity was a trademark of Don C.  I think it may be a little known fact that Don was a very successful contestant on the television game show, Wheel of Fortune.  I have never been much into game shows but apparently Don enjoyed such a challenge and he won thousands of dollars.  He donated all of it to charity.

After the death of my wife, Jane Myers, Don would call to see how I was doing. Jane had asked him to do so.  They were never long calls but just checking in, a faithful friend doing his duty with warmth and sincere intentions.  I miss them now.

As past presidents of SACES and CSI, I will miss Don’s enthusiastic "Hello!” at conferences, his totally engulfing hug preceded by his out stretched arms and big smile. Yes, indeed, SACES and other conferences will never be quite the same for me or for many more among his army of friends and admirers.

Obituary for Dr. Don C. Locke

Dr. Don C. Locke died after a brief illness on June 8, 2016 with his wife and two daughters by his side in Asheville, NC.

Dr. Locke was the only child of Willie R. and Carlene (Lovely) Locke and was born in Macon, Mississippi on April 30, 1943. He graduated from Ira Gentry High School in Indianola, Mississippi, received a B.S. Degree in history and M. Ed. Degree in History Education from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee and his doctorate degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

After marrying his beloved wife Marjorie on June 27, 1964, Don taught social studies and worked as a school counselor in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Upon completion of his doctorate, he began his career in higher education teaching U.S. military personnel in England and Germany. He and his family moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1975 when he became a professor of Counselor Education at North Carolina State University.

Dr. Locke had a very successful career teaching as a tenured professor at North Carolina State University and leveraged this success to become Head of the Department of Counselor Education from 1987 to 1993 and ended his career in higher education as the Director of the North Carolina State University doctoral program in adult education at The Asheville Graduate Center.

Dr. Locke was an active member of the Buncombe County community up until his death. He was most passionate about his work mentoring and guiding promising young people to reach their fullepotential. He received a number of professional awards during his career including the Ella Stephens Barrett Leadership Award from the North Carolina Counseling Association, the Professional Development Award from the American Counseling Association and was named to the Academy of Leaders for Excellence by Chi Sigma Iota, International.

Dr. Locke was named Alumni Distinguished Professor at NC State University in 2003. He was the author of several textbooks and more than 120 articles which focused primarily on multicultural issues in education and counseling.

Dr. Locke was active in a number of community organizations both in Raleigh and Buncombe County including, Asheville Buncombe Community Relations Council, YMI Board of Directors, United Way of Asheville, ABCCM Veterans Shelter, A-B Tech Board of Trustees, Center for Diversity Education, Buncombe County Health and Human Services Board and Pisgah Legal Services Board of Directors.

On June 1, 2016, Dr. Locke received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award and on June 6, 2016 Asheville Buncombe County Community College renamed the library on campus in honor of Dr. Locke. He was deeply moved by these honors.

Dr. Locke, along with his wife, Marjorie, was a world traveler and enjoyed sharing his experiences with others. He will be remembered by family and friends as an energetic, inspiring and generous man. His spirit lives on in the memories of the many lives he touched.

Don is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marjorie, and his two daughters, Tonya of Durham, North Carolina and Regina of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m at Hart Funeral Service Chapel, 60 Phifer Street, Asheville, NC. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 51 Wilburn Place, Asheville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Locke Scholarship at A-B Technical Community College, The Locke Scholarship at UNC Asheville or to Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School.

With the sad news of Dr. Edwin L. Herr’s passing, our profession has lost a marvelous statesperson, scholar, distinguished professor, and mentor to many. Dr. Herr dedicated his career to advancing the counseling profession around the world. His national and international leadership of our profession is remarkable and reflects the type of transformational excellence that CSI has focused on during this year. In fact, in identifying our theme this year, it is my relationship with Ed that guided me. More specifically, throughout his life Ed demonstrated the type of excellence that transforms individuals and associations. He led with the goal of helping others achieve their potential. He showed no deference to status but inclusively reached out to everyone in ways that were caring, empathic, and empowering. I know this because Dr. Herr did this for me in my life. He was my mentor for 35 years and his transformational excellence has made all the difference in my work and life. Like so many, I will forever be grateful for his influence. Our profession is better for his leadership. Those whom he mentored are better people for his caring. We have, indeed, lost a giant who transformed people and our profession.

In Remembrance and Tribute to the Man

When Ed’s son, Chris, asked if I could share a few thoughts about my dear friend, I asked if there were word limits. He responded without hesitating. He said, "we’re talking about my dad here, he never had word limits!” We can laugh but Ed never lacked for words, ever!

Indeed he was without a doubt one of the most prolific scholars in the counseling profession and in several ways stands alone in his many kinds of contributions. Friends know that Ed did all of his scholarly writing by long hand on a legal sized pad. This was before it was ever in typed form. How many thousands of pages that had to make is beyond counting. He testified before Congressional committees, made keynote addresses here and abroad, and all of it started in long hand! His professional vita attests to his many substantial articles, books, monographs and related contributions - but it is the man to whom I wish to call attention.

I first met Ed in the early 1960’s. We were both products to some degree of the National Defense Education Act of 1958. We shared a passion and vision for what the counseling profession could become. We saw it as a bridge for people to dream dreams that compelled them to overcome any obstacles and to realize the life that their hearts’ desired. That vision and hope for others still lives on in Ed’s many mentees and colleagues.

Ed was a natural leader and as a consequence he held so many presidencies, chair and administrative positions that it rivals his publications. No small feat! So when I saw that he’d reached what others considered to be the height of his leadership career, I called to talk with him about running for the presidency of the counseling honor society (Chi Sigma Iota). He told me quite candidly that he was burned out on leadership. He was done!

Never one to be deterred for a good cause, I asked if I could share my experience and how this experience for him would be different. I told him that I could not guarantee that he would get elected but that I could say that if he was elected, I could guarantee that it would be more satisfying than anything that he had done before. When I finished he said that he’d think it over and get back to me. I assume that he spoke with Pat, the love of his life, before responding. The rest is history.

Indeed, Ed later told me that his CSI experience was a highlight of his leadership career. No surprise, Ed was a great president and an active past-president for CSI. I remember well him accepting more than one invitation to make brief remarks at chapter initiations sometimes requiring extraordinary travel arrangements. His real legacy, however, came out of a conversation that we had during a break in an Executive Council meeting.

We asked ourselves after these many years of being away from family, friends, and leisure activities to be involved in leadership within the counseling profession, why were we still doing it? Those who over heard our conversation suggested that we write down our thoughts for others to read. We did and Ed’s reflections are captured in his remarks for one of our annual conference programs and now posted on CSI’s website. Borrowing from Greenleaf’s 1970‘s essay, Ed summed it up beautifully.

"Each member is encouraged to consider and reflect on this question: Am I a leader-first or servant-first or something in between?”

Ed was never "in between”! He was always a servant first. Intelligent, competent, delightful sense of humor and genuinely kind, Ed served in leadership roles not for what they could give him but for what he could give to realize a greater good for others. Ever since that occasion CSI has adopted the "Servant Leader” mantra for its leadership and advocacy philosophy and values. This now reaches a membership exceeding 100,000 while mentoring over 7,000 new members to the profession each year. I can think of no other organization for which Ed served that has benefitted so greatly.

In the conclusion of the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi, Ed’s approach to life can be understood,

"O Divine Master, Grant that I may so much seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand. To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned. And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”

To those of us who knew and will always love Ed, we can add our voices to say, "Well done good and faithful servant!”.

Dr. Rose A. Cooper, CSI President 1991-1992, Life Member

Dr. Cooper, a 56-year resident of White Plains, NY, died at home on December 4, 2015 at the age of 96 following a brief illness. Dr. Cooper was born in Poland and at age 12 emigrated to New York City in the early 1930s with her family who sensed the looming threat of Nazi Germany. She met her late husband, Dr. Ira Cooper, at the City College of New York and settled in White Plains several years after obtaining her doctorate in education at Columbia University. She had a long tenure as the college admissions counselor at White Plains High School before embarking on an equally long stint as a dean at the Westchester Community College. She was also a past president of the American Association of Counseling and Development. Her career as an educator, touching the lives of countless young people, only came to an end upon her retirement a few months prior to her death. Dr. Cooper is survived by a daughter, Dr. Gale Cooper of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a son, Dr. Glenn Cooper, of Sarasota, Florida, his wife, Tessa Cooper, and their son, Shane Cooper. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Ann Kaplan of New York City, who was also her best friend.

There will be a reception at 7-9pm Wednesday, December 9, at the Ballard- Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave., White Plains. The funeral service will be held Thursday, December 10 at 9:30am at Congregation Kol Ami, 252 Soundview Ave, White Plains, NY. About a year and a half ago, we were celebrating Jane’s retirement from UNCG. True to Jane’s reputation, her retirement simply meant she was ready to undertake new professional challenges. She undertook the position of Executive Director of Chi Sigma Iota International, which she approached with the same intensity, ambition, and planning that typified her career.

Jane lived richly at every stage of her life. Just the pictures we saw at the retirement gathering show how multitalented she was. She rode motorcycles and played judo - had a black belt. She learned to fly and owned her own plane. (Jane owned a couple of planes, I believe). Jane got her Ph.D. and established a scholarship that earned her innumerable professional accolades. Jane travelled widely for work and for pleasure. She loved vineyards and red wine. Jane treasured her family and talked about their successes and travails. She did the same with her students.

A few years back, Jane had a major health problem that threatened her life. She was in a coma for a long time and physicians just could not diagnose the problem. But Jane’s resilience, passion for life, love for Tom, as well as Tom’s and the physicians’ care brought her back to a normal life. Jane did not dwell on any of this. She simply moved on! Given all that Jane did and went through, as well as how she handled it all, I called her, at her retirement gathering, Jane Bond!

What solace can be offered to Tom who saw his love go through this harrowing experience? Jane and Tom were inseparable. They loved/love and honor one another. Jane and Tom are lovers and professional partners. They did almost everything together. It continues to warm my heart to remember how they celebrated their wedding anniversary every month. Tom and Jane are much loved and admired. They are loved and admired because of who they are as individuals, the lifestyle they have created together, and the relationship they have cultivated.

Jane has made an indelible mark on life, her profession, and our hearts. Jane is loved. Jane will be missed!

Reluctance

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Nicholas A. Vacc, 62, of Greensboro, N.C., died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Dr. Vacc was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Sept. 22, 1939.

He was the Joe Rosenthal Excellence Professor and past chairman of the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During his tenure as chair, the department was selected as the Outstanding Counselor Education Program in 1991 and 1994.

He served as president of the Association for Assessment in Counseling, editor of the "Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development" journal, and president of Chi Sigma Iota International, the international counseling honor society.

He had served as a member of numerous technical and policy advisory boards and working groups concerned with assessment in counseling and mental health, including the Joint Committee on Testing Practices, the Test-Takers' Rights and Responsibilities Working Group, the Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification, the American Counseling Association President's Advisory Committee and the Guilford County Mental Health Board.

Nicholas had more than 120 scholarly publications including 11 books or monographs, eight book chapters, and 70 referred articles. He made presentations at numerous national and international conferences and had been project director, coordinator or investigator for several externally funded grants.

Recognition of Nicholas' work by his colleagues included the David K. Brooks Jr. Distinguished Mentor Award and the Arthur A. Hitchcock Award for Distinguished Professional Service, both by the American Counseling Association; the Distinguished Mentor Award by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Meritorious Service Award by the Association for Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, the Ella Stephens Barrett Leadership Award by the North Carolina Association for Counseling and Development and being a nominee for the North Carolina Board of Governor's Award for Excellence.

Nicholas was a member of Starmount Forest Country Club and enjoyed playing golf in his spare time.

Dr. Vacc is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Nesbitt Vacc; his mother, Jennie Vacc; and sister, Rosemary Lips, both of Willoughby Hills, Ohio; and his mother-in-law, Ina Nesbitt of Middleburgh, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Vacc.

She was always willing to help others, such as supporting my brother Mike during his own fight with kidney cancer. But her concern was not limited to family. On Saturday night, my family was privileged to join the Good Sam’s camping club, my parents’ group, for dinner. There the members told us now mom reached out to members or families facing their own struggles with cancer. She offered support by conversations, notes, and letters, all while facing her own struggles with chemotherapy. Mom also won because she left us on her own terms. She lived through Thom’s wedding on August 20 and, thanks to modern technology, was able to see pictures of the wedding the next day. And we know she recognized the pictures because, when my sister Lysa repeated some of them, she told us "I’ve already seen that.” She also lived to celebrate her 52nd Wedding Anniversary with my father, Dick. The 52 roses you see beside her are in honor of their 52 loving years together. Mom also lived to celebrate my 40th birthday on Aug. 23. She did not want to create any shadow or sadness on these days of celebration. We also know that mom’s spirit was ready. Dad had gone to church on Aug. 20 and brought communion back to mom. But, mom often had difficulty swallowing, and she couldn’t receive communion on Saturday or Sunday. Then, on the morning of their anniversary on the 22nd, mom said to my dad, "I’ll be with my parents and Christ today.” Mom and dad then said the Our Father, and Dad gave her last communion to her. She had turned her spirit to God and knew that she would soon be with her parents and with her son Paul, whom she lost as a baby and never got to hold. Mom won because she continued to live even after she was diagnosed with cancer. They took the entire Holbrook family on a trip to Alaska to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary. (They went to St. Anne DeBeaupre, Quebec on their honeymoon, and went back on their 50th wedding Anniversary day.) She was able to realize the dream of taking my sister Lysa to New York City for shopping and to see Broadway shows. Indeed, she was able to see one of her favorite actresses, Angela Lansbury, from the 5th Row, Center. She and dad took a cruise down the Danube River so that she could share Budapest and her Hungarian ancestry with Dad. She took a trip to New Orleans, where she was able to partake in that city’s wonderful food and culture, and also were able to meet my partner Namon’s family. There were also their annual trips to Mexico with her brother Bob Schang and his wonderful wife Laurie. Mom won because she raised five independent, stubborn children. She knew that, while our stubbornness may have given her a few grey hairs, it would likely serve us all well in the long run. In fact, when the social worker from the hospice asked mom what she was most proud of, she pointed to the portrait of the five of us that hangs over their fireplace. Mom was incredibly proud of all of us. She also loved the members of the family that we brought to her – Jennifer, Amanda, and Namon. She didn’t love you like her children, because you were her children. She also had seven wonderful grandkids whom she absolutely adored. So, mom did not lose her battle; she didn’t lose anything. How could anyone who lived so fully ever be said to have "lost.” The balloons today are a testament to her life because she wanted us to celebrate her life. In closing, I’ll tell a story from the family’s trip to Alaska. There were 16 Holbrook’s on the trip, which can be a rather intimidating group. At one of the dinners during the cruise, the grandkids all came into the dining room, with jackets and shirts zipped up. Then, all at once, the kids unzipped their jackets to reveal, Superman-style, t-shirts that said "Grandma Kicks Butt!” And she did! As a counselor, grandmother, mother, and wife, Mom, you ROCKED! Carol Dice received her undergraduate degree in business from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then attended the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where she earned her master's degree in education followed by a Ph.D. in counseling and educational development. She had a passionate love for older persons and devoted much of her personal and professional life to working with and on behalf of older adults, both as a volunteer and as a professional counselors. For the past few years she worked in the Duplin County School District, where she worked with special needs children at E.E. Smith Middle School. She loved all of her "kids" and was always eager to tell others about the joys of watching them learn and grow. In addition to her love of persons of all ages, Carol truly loved animals and was an active advocate for pet therapy.

Carol was a CSI Leadership Intern in 1996 and worked on special projects to help promote CSI and the counseling profession. She passed away on May 24, 2011, after battling ovarian cancer for a second time. Memorial donations may be made to the Carol E. Dice Memorial Foundation, 295 Cardens Dove, Timberlake, NC 27583. The foundation provides educational equipment and supplies to be used in the special needs classroom at E. E. Smith Middle School where Carol was employed.

Dr. Thelma Jones Vriend

Born to Thomas and Mary Jones in Panama City, Florida, on July 20, 1929, Thelma Jones learned at a young age that education would be her path to fulfillment. Teachers recognized Thelma’s brightness; mentors groomed her and opened doors which she passed through easily. Thelma Jones Vriend gave back in kind. As a teacher, counselor, administrator, role model and friend, she went on to influence young people throughout her life.

Thelma Jones was accepted into Florida A & M at the age of fifteen. After her sophomore year, she moved to Detroit to be with her sister, Piccola, enrolled in Lewis Business College and was an office worker for the City of Detroit. She left that job and with her savings, entered Wayne State University and graduated with a degree in Family Life Education. It was at that point that the future Dr. Vriend began her life’s calling when she taught Family Living at Eastern High School.

Finding that she spent as much time counseling as teaching, Dr. Vriend returned to Wayne and acquired a Master’s Degree in Counseling before joining the staff of Kettering High School. At that time, Kettering and its feeder schools were involved in The Developmental Career Guidance Project led by Dr. George Leonard of Wayne State. That association prompted Thelma to apply for a National Defense and Education Act grant in order to study at New York University’s year- long institute which focused on counseling minority students. Upward Bound, which originated at Wayne State, also emerged from the NDEA.

Thelma Jones received her Doctorate from NYU in Guidance and Counseling. During the time of the institute, she met her future husband, Dr. John Vriend, who returned with her to Detroit and joined the faculty of Wayne State.

Aiming to create change through leadership, Dr. Vriend accepted the position of Dean of Student Services at Wayne County Community College. She went on to become Vice-President of the College and saw it through a period of extensive growth in the region. After retiring from WCCC, Dr. Vriend taught counseling classes, part-time in the College of Education.

Thelma Jones Vriend served on many Boards and Committees. Professionally, they included the Michigan and National Vocational Guidance Associations; Michigan and National Personnel and Guidance Associations and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Locally she served on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging and Leadership Detroit. Recently she was named the Chi Sigma Iota Sorority’s Scholar. She was a member of Zeta Chi Beta Sorority.

Dr. Vriend is survived by her sister Piccola Jones of Detroit; nephew David Jones of Panama City, Florida; many great and great-great nieces and nephews and many cousins. She was pre- deceased by her former husband, Dr. John Vriend and her companion of many years, John Webb. She is also survived by many good friends including Dr. Reginald Wilson, former President of WCCC, Arlene Altman, Dr. Charmaine Johnson and Helen Leonard who saw her through her illness.

A Memorial Service took place on Saturday, February 12, 2011at Fellowship Chapel, 7707 West Outer Drive, Detroit, 48235.

Her additional careers included library science, and she worked for many years as a librarian after graduating with a Master’s Degree in that field. She was an accomplished musician, cartoonist and cartoon teacher, and freelance writer. Her spiritual memoir, Ridiculous Packaging: or, my long, strange journey from atheist to Episcopalian, in two acts, was released by Cowley Publications in 2005. Karen was active in the First Episcopal Church in Greensboro and contributed many hours of volunteer service to church members and the local community.

Karen was the senior author of a proposal to Chi Sigma Iota, International, to establish the Counselor’s Bookshelf, and she became one of its first editors. Her vision was to provide an on-line resource where counseling students, professional counselors, and counselor educators could share their reactions to books that helped them become a better counselor, bibliotherapy resources, movies and TV shows, and professional books.

Karen died July 7,2010, after a battle with ovarian cancer that began suddenly in October of 2009. Throughout her illness, she maintained a strong, sometimes irreverent, sense of humor and courage. Her presence is already missed.

Friends and acquaintances, both personal and professional, are invited to use this forum to share memories of Karen and help others understand the special gift she was in our lives.
