In today's complex, diverse, and ever-changing communities, counseling leaders need to take an engaged, activist, and courageous approach to help build optimistic futures for all clients, students, parents, and community members. This webinar will provide an overview of an alternative approach to leadership for deep and equitable change. Using vignettes and stories, and drawing on scholarship from a range of disciplines, the presenter will explore the concept of transformative leadership (Shields, 2012) and its potential to increase and improve client outcomes (including mental health settings). Drawing on examples from transformative leaders, the presenter will demonstrate that this leadership can promote client change, academic achievement, family and community empowerment, democratic engagement, and global citizenship. Practicing and aspiring counseling leaders are encouraged to attend.

As a result of participating in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and describe a "transformative leadership style.”
  2. Discuss transformative leadership literature and background.
  3. Discuss how transformative leadership can be applied to counseling settings and counseling leadership.
  4. Discuss possible outcomes to transformative leadership in counseling.
  5. State how their leadership style can be more "transformative.”

Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy is currently the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Johns Hopkins University and a Professor of Counseling and Human Development at the School of Education. As vice provost, Dr. Holcomb-McCoy works closely with the vice deans of faculty and with faculty across the university to advance and promote their important work. In concert with her colleagues in the schools, she concentrates her efforts on ensuring the continued excellence of Johns Hopkins faculty by enhancing faculty development initiatives, increasing faculty diversity and improving the quality of faculty life.

Previous to this role, Dr. Holcomb-McCoy served as the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at the School of Education. She has held appointments as Associate Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Maryland, College Park and Assistant Professor and Director of the School Counseling Program at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Her areas of research specialization include the measurement of multicultural self-efficacy and cultural competence in counseling, the evaluation of urban school counselor preparation and training, and school counselors’ influence on low-income students’ college readiness.

Dr. Holcomb-McCoy is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal for Counseling and Development, and she has served on numerous journal editorial boards, including the Professional School Counseling journal, Journal for Specialists in Group Work, and Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology.

Professional colleagues have recognized her with awards for outstanding multicultural/diversity research, excellence in teaching, and exemplar service. She served as a Faculty Lilly Fellow at the University of Maryland and in 2009, she was awarded the Mary Smith Arnold Anti-Oppression Award at the American Counseling Association conference. Because of her expertise in college counseling, Dr. Holcomb-McCoy was selected to participate as a consultant to the Obama Administration's Reach Higher Initiative. In July 2014, she was one of the plenary speakers at the White House's Summit on Higher Education held at Harvard University.
