This webinar will explore racism as a mental health challenge. First, the historical roots of racist ideas and how these ideas have been broadly expressed in the field of mental health will be explored. Second, the impact of racism on mental health will be considered from the perspectives of both victims and perpetrators. Third, an antiracist perspective on counseling with both victims and perpetrators of racism will be presented.

By the end of the webinar, participants will:

1. Gain knowledge of the evolution of racism and racist ideas.

2. Be able to delineate and discuss racism as a mental health issue.
3. Be able to assess how racism contributes to trauma for both victims and perpetrators of racism.
4. Be able to identify culturally competent counseling interventions for people impacted by racism.

Dr. Courtland C. Lee is a Professor in the Counselor Education Program at the Washington DC campus of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He is the author, editor, or co-editor of seven books on multicultural counseling and three books on counseling and social justice. In addition, he has published numerous book chapters and articles on counseling across cultures. Dr. Lee is a Fellow and Past President of the American Counseling Association. He is also a Past President of Chi Sigma Iota.
