This webinar is for graduate students and other CSI members seeking to develop their skills utilizing the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Knowing how to apply it properly in papers, theses, and dissertations can make you a more effective academic writer. Learning APA style is not always as simple as checking the Publication Manual for an answer, however. The manual can be challenging to navigate, and answers, once found, may be overly abstract (e.g., what is anthropomorphism?).

This presentation is organized around a practical approach to learning APA style. You will learn tactics for navigating the Publication Manual such as reviewing the sample papers and index. Dr. Korcuska will identify common errors and ways to avoid them. Finally, you will be introduced to resources which can guide you on APA style, including those commonly found on websites such as the APA Style Blog.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn the primary characteristics of academic writing.

2. Identify how the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association can make you a more effective academic writer.
3. Describe approaches for utilizing the style guide (e.g., start with the examples).
4. List common errors of APA style.
5. Identify ways to avoid common errors of APA Style.
6. Locate APA style resources.
