Many counselors feel inadequately prepared to address the needs of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. This session will attempt to deepen knowledge and understanding of TGNC individuals, helping counselors to work more effectively with TGNC clients. Empirical information from a recent study that the presenter and colleagues conducted will be shared, thereby highlighting the complexities of identities and emphasizing the unique needs of TGNC clients.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attain basic knowledge of a multiculturally diverse group known as transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.
2. Increase understanding of barriers facing transgender and gender nonconforming clients.
3. Increase knowledge of trans-affirmative counseling practices.

Rafe McCullough, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, is a Counselor Educator at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He has been an active member of the American Counseling Association, serving on the CACREP Revisions Committee in 2013, on the Multicultural Competency Revision Committee for the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD) in 2015-2016, and currently on the ACA Cultural Encounters Task Force. Dr. McCullough is one of the authors of the new Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies. Having worked with many transgender and gender nonconforming clients and students, he has backgrounds in both clinical mental health counseling and in school counseling. His writing and research interests focus on multicultural and social justice counseling and advocacy, LGBTQ, and particularly the needs of transgender individuals. He has been involved in advocacy efforts in transgender communities for over 20 years.
