A Beta Chapter Leadership Spotlight: Brooke Michaelis

Posted By Jenna M. Neal, Wednesday, February 18, 2015

CSI Beta Chapter is excited to post our next leadership spotlight blog! Brooke Michaelis, CSI’s Secretary-Elect, is from Jacksonville, Florida and is currently in her second year as a Marriage and Family Counseling student. We asked Brooke what she has enjoyed about CSI and her role as Secretary-Elect; here is what she has to say!

"It has been an exciting year as Secretary-Elect of our Beta Chapter and I am ready for the coming year as Secretary to see what new growth our chapter will experience. My role has meant that I have gotten to spend time and learn from other CSI members that I would not have gotten to meet in classes, create connections throughout our counseling community, and become more involved and knowledgeable about the CSI organization as a whole. Each member brings his or her own unique strengths to our team to make it even better and I am happy to be able to contribute to this community."

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?”

Annual Spring Potluck

This spring semester started off with a bang at the CSI Beta Chapter potluck. With over 50 people in attendance, we had an amazing turn out and lots of delicious dishes and drinks. Among the many awesome dishes were assorted cheeses and dips and some amazing desserts. Everyone enjoyed a great night of conversation and munchies. Fun was had by all; we are looking forward to next year’s potluck already!

An Inspiring Beta Chapter Leadership Spotlight: Mercedes Machado

Posted By Lacey M. Zarlengo, Thursday, October 16, 2014

Hi Counselors!

As I am writing this, I am reminded that this is my last year in the program and my last year as a part of Beta Chapter. Though I know that it will be difficult to say good-bye, I find joy and comfort reflecting on what Beta chapter has meant to me. It seems like just yesterday I was being initiated alongside an amazing group of counselor educators—many of which have become my closest and dearest friends. Last Spring, I decided to re-run for the Treasurer position, because I found myself wanting to give more to Beta Chapter and wanting to enhance my connections with the Counselor Ed community. I feel honored to be voted as Treasurer for a second consecutive year, and even more so, I feel touched to be trusted in this capacity. Beta Chapter has been my family away from home. When I got to a CSI meeting, I find that my spirits are often lifted as I interact with some of the most inspirational and hardworking people I have ever met. This family has been there for me to share in my sorrow throughout trying times and to celebrate with me during joyful ones.

Our past president, Melanie Varney, and our current president, Sarah Nadler, have worked tirelessly for the betterment of our chapter, and their dedication and passion is truly admirable. This year, I hope to work together with the fundraising committee to create fun and innovative fundraising activities, and to continue to promote our new Counselor Ed shirts, which has our most successful fundraiser yet. I am so thankful for Lauren Sandler and Morgan Seiler for creating two wonderful winning designs, and I am forever in debt to my best friend and hero, Jacob MacGibbon, for the endless amount of time, energy and heart that he has dedicated to this project. These T- shirts have allowed our UF Counselor Ed community to feel more cohesive and more connected to one another.

This academic year, I am completing my internship at UF’s Counseling and Wellness Center. My experience thus far has been challenging and delightful. I feel blessed to be able to serve college students, many of which are the first in their families to take the leap of faith to pursue higher education. My clients challenge me, inspire me, and teach me more than they will ever know. My supervisors continue to touch my life, and help me grow personally and professionally. Come May, I will have to say farewell to amazing friends, supervisors, and an incredible CSI Beta Chapter family. I know it won’t be easy, but I look forward to the many “hellos”, memories and celebrations that are yet to come.

Raising Awareness for Mental Health: NAMI Gainesville Walk

Posted By Lacey M. Zarlengo, Thursday, October 2, 2014

This past Saturday (9/27) the CSI Beta Chapter Leadership team, along with others from the Counselor Ed community, gathered together to participate in the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Gainesville Annual Walk. NAMI stands for a mission that impacts our profession as counselors and is the nation’s largest community mental health organization. NAMI’s passion is to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by serious mental illness. This walk is held annually to raise awareness surrounding mental health and to show support to those individuals and their families--“walking together on the path to recovery.” To obtain more information, resources, or to make a donation, please visit: www.nami.org or www.namigainesville.org.

A big thanks to all who participated and a special thanks to our CSI Professional Development and Fundraising committees for your involvement in encouraging Counselor Ed participants and showing your Counselor Ed spirit!
