Former Director of Diversity and Multiculturalism, UNC-Asheville

Dr. Locke was Distinguished Professor Emeritus at NC State University and the former Director of Diversity and Multiculturalism at UNC-Asheville. At his retirement in 2005 he was Director of the Asheville Graduate Center and Director of the North Carolina State University doctoral program in Adult and Community College Education at the Asheville Graduate Center. He earned his doctorate degree from Ball State University.

Don Locke worked as a high school social studies teacher and high school counselor in the state of Indiana. After receiving his doctorate degree, he was a professor and head of the Department of Counselor Education at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

He served the Counseling Profession in numerous capacities including as President of the North Carolina Counseling Association, Chair of the Southern Region Branch of the American Counseling Association, President of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, President of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, President of Chi Sigma Iota International, a member of the American Counseling Association Governing Council, and Chair of the Counseling and Human Development Foundation.

He was the author or co-author of more than 100 publications, with a focus on multicultural issues. Dr. Locke was the author or co-author of seven books with the titles, Increasing Multicultural Understanding, Psychological Techniques for Teachers, and Culture and Diversity Issues in Counseling.

Dr. Locke was the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Ella Stephens Barrett Leadership Award from the North Carolina Counseling Association, and the Professional Development Award from the American Counseling Association, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. He and his colleague Pamela Paisley (University of Georgia) were honored for their student mentoring by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision with the naming of the Locke-Paisley Mentoring Award. He was an active volunteer in Buncombe County, North Carolina.
