Dr. Craig Cashwell

Dr. Craig S. Cashwell is a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Cashwell holds bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Recreation Administration from the University of North Carolina, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Cashwell is a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina, a National Certified Counselor, an Approved Clinical Supervisor, and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist Supervisor. In addition to his faculty position at UNCG, Dr. Cashwell maintains a part-time private practice focused on couple counseling and behavioral addictions.
Dr. Cashwell served as the President of Chi Sigma Iota International during the 2014-2015 fiscal year. He focuses his scholarship on behavioral addictions and the competent and ethical integration of spirituality and religion into counseling. He has authored more than 125 publications, including Integrating Spirituality and Religion Into Counseling: A Guide to Competent Practice, published by the American Association and Clinical Mental Health Counseling: A Guide to Effective Practice, published by Sage.
Dr. Cashwell has received numerous awards for teaching, research, service, and mentoring. He has received mentoring awards from UNCG, the North Carolina Counseling Association, the Southern Conference of Graduate Schools, and the American Counseling Association. Dr. Cashwell has twice received the Outstanding Counselor Education and Supervision article award from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and has directed five dissertations that received national awards. The Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling has recognized Dr. Cashwell with both the Meritorious Service Award and the Lifetime Service Award. In 2012, he received the Chi Sigma Iota International Thomas J. Sweeney Professional Leadership Award. Dr. Cashwell has received the UNCG School of Education Teaching Excellence Award. He also is an American Counseling Association Fellow, the highest honor bestowed by ACA.
In addition to his service to Chi Sigma Iota International, Dr. Cashwell is a Past-Chair of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), Past-President of the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling (ASERVIC), and has served as the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Governing Council Representative to ACA. He has served on numerous journal editorial boards and as Editor for the Counseling and Values journal.
Dr. Cashwell enjoys music, exercising and, most importantly, time with his wife, Dr. Tammy Cashwell (also a Counselor Educator) and daughter, Sam.
