Dr. Casey Barrio Minton
Associate Professor of Counselor Education, The University of Tennessee-Knoxville
Dr. Casey Barrio Minton is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She previously served as an Associate Professor of Counseling and Counseling Program Coordinator at the University of North Texas. Dr. Barrio Minton holds a B.A. in Sociology and Communication from St. Norbert College and an M.S. in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a nationally ranked and recognized counselor preparation program. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education and Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Barrio Minton is a National Certified Counselor and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Trainer. She specializes in crisis intervention and has worked as an assessment and crisis counselor with adolescents and adults across mental health counseling settings. She also served as director of the Counseling & Human Development Center, a university-based mental health counseling training center.
Dr. Barrio Minton was featured in Counseling Today (November, 2009) as one of nine counselor educators from universities across the U.S. who "seek answers to tough questions – and provide the profession with a stronger knowledge base in the process.” She has secured over $500,000 in grant funding to support her research agenda and provide crisis services to young adults on college campuses. She has 19 refereed journal articles in print or in press with more under review, and equally as many creative works and additional publications. She is co-author of The Professional Counselor and co-editor of Professional Counseling Excellence through Leadership and Advocacy. Both texts received the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Outstanding Publication Award. She is active on research teams regarding counselor education.
Dr. Barrio Minton is a member of the editorial review boards for Counselor Education & Supervision and the Journal of Professional Counseling, and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Counseling Outcome Research & Evaluation She has presented at professional association conferences at the state, regional, national, and international levels, and consults with organizations concerning crisis issues and student learning outcome assessment.
An active member of state and national counseling associations, Dr. Barrio Minton is a former Leadership Fellow and Past-President of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) International. She is President-Elect for the Association for Assessment in Counseling and Education (AACE). She has served on the AACE Task Force regarding CACREP Assessment and Evaluation Guidelines, Chi Sigma Iota Research Task Force, CSI Strategic Planning Committee, ACA Research & Knowledge Committee, and CSI Leadership Fellow Mentor Committee.
Dr. Barrio Minton is the recipient of numerous awards from universities and professional associations, including awards for outstanding teaching, research, and service. Her most recent awards include the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision’s 2012 Outstanding Publication in Counselor Education Award, UNC Greensboro Department of Counseling & Educational Development’s 2012 Alumni Excellence Award, and the American Counseling Association’s 2011 Best Practice Research Award.
Dr. Barrio Minton enjoys movies, exercise, and dining with her partner, Joel, and friends. She enjoys reading, learning to paint, and playtime with her trusty dog Cosmo in the hot Texas sun.
