Joel has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Sussex in the UK.  Since his undergraduate degree he has worked in seven schools across four countries.  He has worked as a Teaching Assistant at a primary school in a low socioeconomic neighborhood in the UK.  He has also taught English abroad, working in various schools in Thailand and Turkey.  He currently works for the Center for International Student Access at George Mason University.  As the Reading Programs Coordinator and Reading Tutor he works directly with pre-undergraduate international students at the university and helps them to reach their academic reading goals.  He really enjoys working with students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and has a particular interest in multicultural counseling.  This interest influenced his decision to choose the Counseling and Development program at George Mason University and he hopes to continue working in culturally diverse schools in the future.

Secretary -Treasurer - Jennie Altieri

Jennie received her Master’s degree in Psychology from American University in 2009 and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Ramapo College in New Jersey.  She has worked extensively in inpatient mental health, providing both psychiatric consult to the emergency room and clinical support on the psychiatric unit, 50% of whom were detention status.  As part of her responsibilities, Ms. Altieri has testified in both mental health court and Fairfax County District Court on patient cases.  For seven years, she worked with victims of crime, advocating on their behalf with law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys, and community agencies.  In this role, she developed and implemented annual victimization training for staff, volunteers and service providers at a national non-profit.  Ms. Altieri has completed certification training on Violence Risk and Threat Assessment, Managing and Treating Sex Offenders and Solution Focused Brief Therapy.  She is currently working in prisoner re-entry at a community agency providing solution focused coaching to assist clients in developing goals, including employment, education, family reunification, mental health and substance abuse recovery.  Her work in prisoner reentry motivated her to pursue another Master’s degree in Counseling at George Mason University that focuses on diversity, multiculturalism and social justice.  Jennie is dedicated to using her education and experience to help ex-offenders rebuild their lives and transition back into the community.
