Self-injurious behavior (e.g., self-cutting, self-burning) is an often-misunderstood client behavior that involves numerous risk considerations. The presenter will review legal and ethical considerations for mental health professionals. Practical suggestions for decreasing provider risk will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will understand potential client motivations for engaging in self-injurious behavior.
2. Participants will understand potential legal and ethical considerations in working with clients who self-injure.
3. Participants will review strategies for minimizing risk when working with clients who self-injure.


Dr. Rachel O’Neill is an Ohio-Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervisory Endorsement. Dr. O’Neill earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Kent State University, a M.S.Ed. in Counseling and B.A. in Psychology from Youngstown State University.  Dr. O’Neill has over 15 years’ experience in the mental health profession. She has authored over 20 scholarly journal articles and book chapters. She has presented over 100 times at national, state, and local conferences and workshops. Dr. O’Neill is a Core Faculty member in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Walden University.
