While domestic violence affects women of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, the intersection of race, gender and socioeconomic status places African American women at an increased risk for experiencing violence by an intimate partner. This webinar will discuss factors that perpetuate African American women's experiences with domestic violence.

One in three women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime (NCADV, 2014). While domestic violence affects women of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, the intersection of race, gender and socioeconomic status places African American women at an increased risk for experiencing violence by an intimate partner. This webinar will discuss factors that perpetuate African American women's experiences with domestic violence and implications for counselors.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the latest research on the intersection of race, gender and domestic violence;
2. Participants will enhance their knowledge about the role of spirituality for African Americans;
3. Participants will learn effective ways to assist domestic violence survivors.


Dr. Shanita S. Brown holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling & Counselor Education from North Carolina State University. Her research and service activities focus on emerging contexts of intimate partner violence (domestic violence), multicultural counseling, social justice issues and adolescence. She is a Past-President of CSI’s Nu Sigma Chi Chapter. She has presented at state, regional and national counseling conferences. Recognized as an emerging leader in the counseling profession, she holds a solid record of service in the counseling profession. She is a past Governing Board Council Member of the North Carolina Counseling Association, and currently serves as Secretary of the Association of Multicultural Counseling & Development, a division of ACA. Dr. Brown is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Wake Forest University.
