Play is an important part of the daily life of a child, which is positively correlated with social and emotional health. This presentation will provide practitioners with the practical steps to begin a play therapy program in the school setting. It will also provide practitioners with information about how such a program can impact academic, behavioral, and emotional aspects of the child.


Pedro J. (P.J.) Blanco is an Assistant Professor of Counseling & Development in the Department of Family Sciences at Texas Woman's University. He has specialized training and experience in working with children using play therapy in community agencies as well as in the school system. P.J.’s primary teaching areas are Play Therapy, Counseling Skill Development, and Clinical Courses. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. As a therapist, P.J. believes strongly in the importance of providing developmentally appropriate treatment. He has over ten years of play therapy experience and has conducted several research projects in the public school system. He is interested in strengthening the link between play therapy and academic achievement. P.J. has served as a presenter in multiple national and state conferences and is the past treasurer of the Texas Association for Play Therapy.


Dr. Ryan Holliman’s two specialties and passions are working with children through play therapy and the diagnostic assessment process. Dr. Holliman has been a play therapist in a variety of settings from Title I school districts to non-profit agencies to private practices. As well, Dr. Holliman is one of the developers of the first pen-and-paper assessments developed specifically for play therapy, and he continues to develop assessment tools for the measurement of issues salient to play therapists. Dr. Holliman is currently an Assistant Professor in the Family Sciences department at Texas Woman’s University.
