When It's Not Okay to Grieve: An Overview of Disenfranchised Grief

When individuals are either deprived of the opportunity to grieve or believe that they do not have the right to grieve, numerous negative consequences may result. This webinar will provide an overview of Kenneth Doka’s concept of disenfranchised grief and provide a variety of examples of different types of disenfranchised grief. The presenter will provide recommendations for identifying and working with clients experiencing disenfranchised grief.
By participating in this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Understand and recognize disenfranchised grief,
2. Recognize the negative effects that disenfranchised grief can have on individuals and systems,
3. Become familiar with interventions to facilitate positive healing and growth for those experiencing disenfranchised grief.
June M. Williams is an Associate Professor of Counseling at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. She earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of New Orleans. Prior to joining the Counseling faculty full-time in 2000, Dr. Williams served as the assistant director of the University Counseling Center and as the assistant dean of Student Life at Southeastern. She has served as president of several state and national professional associations including Chi Sigma Iota, International Counseling Honor Society, LCCA, ACCA, and LCA, and she has served on the editorial boards for the Journal of College Counseling and Adultspan. She served two terms (eight years) on the Louisiana LPC Board of Examiners. Her research interests include grief and loss, gratitude, and resilience.
