Social Equality, Social Interest, and Wellness: The Practitioner's Challenge of Today

Dr. Tom Sweeney, CSI International Founding President & Executive Director Emeritus

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST

Tom Sweeney

Among the several approaches to counseling interventions, one stands out for its appropriateness to promoting the goals of social equality, social interest, and wellness. At the turn of the last century, Dr. Alfred Adler espoused a radical but practical approach to human relations based upon what we now call social justice principles. Its most articulate advocate Dr. Rudolf Dreikurs gave practitioners the tools to achieve these lofty goals. This webinar is designed to provide a foundation for appreciating its value today and how it is already incorporated into the repertoire of an effective practitioner’s approach.

Learning Objectives:
1.    To briefly provide participants with the philosophy, psychology and methods associated with Drs. Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs’ approach to helping.
2.    To explain how this foundation for helping others is more relevant today than when they first espoused them.
3.    To provide a step-by-step process for conflict resolution based upon this foundation that is applicable in any social problem-solving situation.

4.    To give illustrations of methods associated with this approach and their application to specific populations such as will be presented in future webinars.

Dr. Tom Sweeney is Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.  His book Adlerian counseling and psychotherapy (2009) is now in its fifth edition and is reputed to be a classic text among counseling practitioners. In addition, Dr. Sweeney has had both training videos and a national award winning tele-course, Coping With Kids, distributed worldwide by the American Counseling Association (ACA) and broadcast on local, state, and regional television.  He has taught classes, workshops, and made presentations in this country and abroad on a range of topics including the theory and practice of Adlerian counseling and psychotherapy for work with individuals, families and groups across the life span. Promoting social equality and wellness have been guiding principles in his approach and work.
