The Disciplinary Practices of African American Mothers and Fathers: Engaging in Culturally Responsive Research

Dr. Carla Adkison-Bradley, Professor of Counselor Education, Western Michigan University
Tuesday, February 11, 2014
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST

Carla Adkison-Bradley

This presentation will discuss the results of a mixed-method research study of child disciplinary strategies used by African American parents. Findings indicated that strategies used by parents represented a hierarchal pattern starting with verbal discussion followed up with a more severe disciplinary action. It was also found that African American parents were firm in maintaining certain standards of behavior in older children. Counselors are ethically bound to embrace a multicultural approach to counseling. Thus, it is essential for counselors to understand the context of the disciplinary episode and behavioral expectations of African American parents. Implications for engaging in culturally responsive research will be discussed.

Dr. Carla Adkison-Bradley is a Professor in the Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Department at Western Michigan University. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling and Human Development from Kent State University in which she was awarded the department’s distinguished alumni award. Dr. Adkison-Bradley has published extensively on child disciplinary practices in African American families, counselor preparation, and faculty development. She has served as a child discipline expert witness in civil and criminal courts. Dr. Adkison-Bradley is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the accrediting body for the counseling profession. She is also past president of the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision and a life member of Chi Sigma Iota.
