Supervision Synergy: Assessment, Reflection, and Intervention Roles and tasks of supervisors are as complex as those of counselors in that there are many variables to consider when choosing to intervene with a supervisee. This webinar will offer a map to assist the supervisor in the assessment process. Assessment must include reflection on a variety of possible challenges to effective supervision when issues arise. Interventions that follow this process are more likely to be productive.

Roles and tasks of supervisors are as complex as those of counselors in that there are many variables to consider when choosing to intervene with a supervisee. This webinar will offer a map to assist the supervisor in the assessment process. Assessment must include reflection on a variety of possible challenges to effective supervision when issues arise. Interventions that follow this careful process are more likely to be productive.

Learning Objectives:

· The participant will be given a conceptual map for considering different aspects of supervision.
· The participant will be able to understand the interplay of different aspects of supervision.
· The participant will be prepared to better assess "what is going on” in supervision and choose appropriate interventions.


Dr. Janine M. Bernard is Professor of Counseling and Counselor Education at Syracuse University. Dr. Bernard is the author of the widely-used Discrimination Model of supervision and has published extensively in the area of clinical supervision. Her co-authored text (with Rodney Goodyear), Fundamentals of Clinical Supervision, is now in its 5th edition. Dr. Bernard has made presentations on a variety of topics in supervision throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in Europe, Asia, and Australia. She is a Fellow of the American Counseling Association and has served on NBCC’s Board of Directors. Dr. Bernard is a licensed mental health counselor in NY, a National Certified Counselor, and holds the Approved Clinical Supervisor credential.
