Diagnosis with DSM-5 and ICD

K. Dayle Jones, Ph.D., Associate Professor, University of Central Florida, Coordinator of the Mental Health Counseling Program
Thursday, June 11, 2013 - 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EST

K. Dayle Jones

With the release of the DSM-5, counselors need information about changes in the new manual. Dr. K. Dayle Jones will provide an overview of the DSM-5, including its development process, changes to the organizational structure, major revisions to existing diagnoses, and the addition of new disorders.

"The impact of the DSM-5 revisions will ripple throughout mental health care, from diagnosis to treatment to overall mental health services,” said Jones. "These changes will affect the way counselors and other professionals define normal and abnormal when it comes to mental health.”

Participants will also be informed about the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), its designation as HIPAA’s official codebook for diagnosing mental disorders, and its relationship to DSM-5, as well as overall implications for diagnostic practice.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify at least three revisions to the DSM-5’s organization structure and to new and existing disorders.
  2. Describe the ICD and discuss its relationship to the DSM-5 in classifying mental disorders.
  3. Discuss at least two implications of the DSM-5 and ICD in counseling practice.

K. Dayle Jones, Ph.D., LMHC is Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Central Florida where she teaches assessment and diagnosis of mental disorders. Dr. Jones is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the revision of the International Classification of Diseases section on Mental and Behavioural Disorders. She chaired the ACA DSM-5 Proposed Revisions Task Force and was column editor for Counseling Today’s "Inside the DSM-5” series.
