Professional Advocacy

Chi Sigma Iota is committed to advocacy for professional counselors as well as their clients. To operationalize this commitment, in 1998 the Society sponsored two national invitational conferences of leaders in the counseling profession who came together to develop a coordinated national plan for professional advocacy. The reports of both conferences and the strategic plan for professional advocacy are presented here.

For more information about the Counselor Advocacy Leadership Conferences contact Dr. Jane Myers, Executive Director, Chi Sigma Iota.

Themes

Chi Sigma Iota Advocacy Training Materials are organized according to the six advocacy themes identified in the Strategic Plan for Professional Advocacy. To view the individual objectives associated with each theme along with detailed plans for a professional advocacy project that a chapter might undertake, click on one of the themes listed in the right navigation bar. Along with instructions, additional information and resources to assist in completing the project are identified. To submit professional advocacy activities that can be added to this page, contact, Ms. Stephanie T. Burns (sburns1@kent.edu) or Dr. Daniel R. Cruikshanks (dcruiksh@heidelberg.edu), Co-Chairs of the CSI Professional Advocacy Committee.

Professional Credentials

Professional Counselor Credentials and requirements are primarily consistent with national standards for accreditation and credentialing, however, specific requirements and the titles of counseling credentials vary among individual states. Within a given state, licensure for professional counselors is approved by state legislatures. Professional counseling credentials and acronyms within each state are provided here for easy reference by consumers and professionals. Information on each credential is available through the websites of each state counselor licensure board.

Additional organizations which advocate on behalf of professional counselors and our clients include:

Advocacy Heroes and Heroines Interviews

Each year chapters are asked to follow the Annual Guidelines for Selecting Interviewees and Conducting Interviews to solicit nominations, vote, conduct interviews, and submit to CSI International a 750 word article based upon the 8-question interview. The article will be uploaded to the Advocacy Heroes and Heroines Forum, with photos and other materials important to describe the accomplishments of your local professional advocates.

You are also encouraged to view our National & Global Professional Advocacy Interviews to learn more about our international leaders.

Advocacy Chapter Recognition Certificates

One of the goals of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) is to promote and recognize academic and professional excellence in counseling scholarship, leadership, advocacy, and practice. One of the objectives of this goal is to promote and recognize excellence in professional advocacy.

CSI charged the Professional Advocacy Committee with honoring CSI members who are currently advocating for professional counseling – our Advocacy Heroes and Heroines. We encourage each chapter annually to honor at least one counseling student, counselor educator, or professional counselor who is actively engaged in professional advocacy with a Certificate of Appreciation for Advocacy. Please use this opportunity to recognize and encourage those in your community who have reached out on behalf of the counseling profession.

The activities of all chapter advocacy heroes and heroines will be highlighted through the Advocacy Heroes and Heroines Forum.
