Dr. Tom Sweeney is Professor Emeritus of Counselor Education in the College of Education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor's degree at the University of Akron, and his Master's degree in counseling at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). His doctoral degree in Counselor Education was received from Ohio State University.

Dr. Sweeney worked as a teacher and school counselor prior to receiving his doctoral degree. After he received his doctorate, he taught at the University of South Carolina for eight years where he developed their counselor education program from a faculty of one and a quarter persons to eight faculty members, four secretaries, and a modern counselor education laboratory and faculty suite. He was also Program Coordinator of Counselor Education and Director of the School of Applied Behavioral Sciences and Educational Leadership at Ohio University. Since taking early retirement from Ohio University in 1992, he taught one quarter each year through 2005.
Dr. Sweeney has served the profession of counseling in numerous capacities including the Executive Director and founding President of Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society Interrnational (CSI), American Counseling Association(ACA) state branch President, the first ACA Southern Region Branch Assembly Chair, President of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES), President of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), President of the American Counseling Association (ACA), founding Chair of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), founding President of the International Association for Marriage and Family Counseling (IAMFC), and an elected Board Member of both the Association for Adult Development and Aging (AADA) and the National Association for Career Development (NACD).
He also was selected as a featured leader (and one of the counseling profession’s most notable leaders of the past century) for a chapter in West, Osborn, & Bubenzer, (Eds). Leaders and Legacies: Contributions to the Counseling Profession (2002) by Taylor & Francis.
He was author of both position papers adopted and implemented by ACA for professional counselor licensure (1975) and national accreditation (1981) resulting in licensure for professional counselors in all but two states (2004) and CACREP, the national accreditating body for the profession of counseling. He was also instrumental in helping to launch what has become the National Board of Cerified Counselors, Inc.
With his assistance, the counseling honor society (CSI) has grown since 1985 to over 250 plus campus based chapters, 61,000 members initiated, and an annual active membership of 12,000 worldwide. Representing all specialties of professional counseling, CSI is now one of largest counseling associations in the world advocating for professional counselors and their clients through the promotion of both personal and professional excellence.
He has authored numerous publications including books, monographs, book chapters, research reports, and articles. He was noted as among the top 2-5% contributors over a recent fifteen year period to the Journal of Counseling and Development. Besides the fifth edition of his book, Adlerian Counseling and Psychotherapy (2009), he is co-author of Ivey, Ivey, Myers, & Sweeney, Developmental Counseling and Therapy; Promoting Wellness Over the Life Span (2005), and co-author and editor, Myers & Sweeney, Wellness Counseling: Theory, Research, & Practice (2005).
He has produced training videos on counseling older persons, early recollection and DCT assessment and a national award-winning telecourse, Coping With Kids broadcast and distributed worldwide. He has been principal investigator and project director for grants in excess of a million dollars. He is also a keynote speaker, presenter, workshop director, and consultant nationally and internationally.
Dr. Sweeney is the recipient of numerous awards for leadership and service including two national awards each from both ACA and ACES, and he also has the distinction of two awards in his name, one the prestigious CSI Distinguished Leadership Award, and the other awarded by his colleagues at Ohio University to an outstanding counselor education leader as a Leader in Residence. He is also a CSI Charter Member of the Academy of Leaders for Excellence.
He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of Ohio with Supervisor Counselor endorsement. He is a life member of CSI, ACA, ACES, and the American School Counselors Association (ASCA).
Now a resident of North Carolina, he and his wife, Dr. Jane E. Myers enjoy their ten grandchildren, kayaking and both are instrument rated private pilots which they use for business and pleasure related travel.
